Written by Robert Holmes - BDO - 26th July 2010.
HUGE SUCCESS IN NEW BRAINTREE HOME
The move from Kettering to Towerlands Park in Braintree proved to be a huge success for the Winmau BDO British Classic – especially for ‘local girl’ DETA HEDMAN, who celebrated with her first ever Classic win in the Women’s Singles.
Deta lives in nearby Witham and her latest victory can be added to the long line of BDO titles she has won in the last couple of years. She is now firmly established as British and World Women’s No.1.
She triumphed 3-2 against Karen Lawman in the final.
Scotland’s ROSS MONTGOMERY is the 2010 Men’s Singles Champion after triumphing 2-0 over Stuart Kellett. Ross, who won the title in 2008 finished in considerable style with an 11 dart closing leg of 140/180/145 which left him on 36 after 9 darts!

Obituary: Michael (Mick) Getty .
Written by Olly Croft - BDO - 25th May 2010.
It is my sad duty to report that MICK GETTY, a stalwart of the BDO and a personal friend and colleague, has passed away after a long bout of illness at the age of 65.
He had been an active and committed member of the BDO since the very beginning in the early 1970’s and was a former Secretary for Merseyside, President of Glamorgan, England Selector and a BDO Executive and former Director.
On top of all that he was one of the BDO’s best known characters, whose presence will be sorely missed within the BDO.
He joined the BDO’s head office in the early 1980’s and I was privileged to have him working alongside me for the last 30 years in the office, and as the valuable and respected head of the BDO Stage crew at all BDO tournaments.
He was well known, well liked and well respected by all who knew him and I send heartfelt condolences to his wife Sue and his family at this extremely sad time.
You will be sadly missed by us all Mick. God Bless and may you now Rest In Peace and be free of pain.

The 4th MariFlex Open Darts Tournament has come to an end. It was a successful tournament, with two great Champions, Scotsman John Henderson and Deta Hedman from England. Also main sponsor of this event, the MariFlex Group of Companies, at Vlaardingen was very pleased with the exposure the company had with this event. MariFlex already is main sponsor of two world top darters, Willy van de Wiel from the Netherlands and English darts player, Tony O’Shea, better known as ‘Silverback’.
The good result of the MariFlex Open is the reason MariFlex Group of Companies now announces that they add the MariFlex team with two new world top darts players, Joey ten Berge from the Netherlands and ‘The Dazzler’, Darryl Fitton from England. Joey, living in the Hague, already knew he found a new main sponsor in MariFlex. Darryl Fitton was told so some minutes before the official announcement. Darryl of course was completely surprised but very happy to get MariFlex Group of Companies as sponsor. |
The team now is formed by two of the best players from England and the Netherlands. Darryl Fitton for some months ago was in the media hitting a nine darter at the Zuiderduin Masters, and later he was the champion of this event with 24 of the best players of the world.
A week ago Joey ten Berge was the runner up of the International Isle of Man darts event. He lost in the finale from Stuart Kellet,England

TRINA HONOURED WITH ‘TRINA TRAIL’
Written by Robert Holmes- 4th December 2009.
Trina Gulliver has been uniquely honoured in her home town of Southam, Warwickshire, with seven specially made benches to celebrate her seven consecutive BDO Lakeside Women’s World titles from 2001 to 2007.
Each specially engraved bench has been placed in sites around the town which are special to Trina – starting at the Bowling Green Pub, which was run by her parents and where she lived until the age of 4.
The benches celebrate each of the seven years in which Trina won her titles, and an attractive colour brochure has been produced. It is entitled ‘The Trina Trail’ and describes Trina as ‘Southam’s Golden Girl’.
Darts is also a winner, because never before has a darts player been honoured in this way. “I feel completely overwhelmed that Southam has honoured me and my achievements in darts in such a unique way”, says Trina. “The town and its people have given me tremendous support throughout my career and I am proud that they have recognised me in this way.”
Not only is the trail destined to become an enjoyable walk for local people, but it is now a tourist attraction in the town. |

Obituary: Mel Webb
Written by Robert Holmes - 15th June 2009.
MEL WEBB, a former Times journalist and great friend and supporter of darts, has sadly passed away.
An accomplished and incisive writer, he loved attending darts tournaments and was a regular at the Lakeside World Professional for a number of years.
In the backstage press office, he was noted not only for his knowledge and banter, but also his love of a good cup of tea.
He maintained the interest of The Times in the sport of darts and its players over a number of years, until he was surprisingly and unexpectedly made redundant some time ago.
A master of the written word, he suffered a fatal heart-attack at home on June 11th . Mel Webb was a great and generous man who will be sadly missed by us all, and the British Darts Organisation sends its sincere condolences to his wife and family at this very sad time. |
